Pilot
Asuka Langley Soryu
Asuka Langley Soryu is the Second Child, the proud pilot of Unit-02 who arrives from Germany in Episode 8 and moves in with Misato and Shinji. The Angel Arael breaks her mind, but in The End of Evangelion she feels her mother inside Unit-02 and beats all nine Mass Production Evas before her power runs out.
Rei Ayanami is the First Child, the quiet pilot of Unit-00 who smiles for the first time when Shinji rescues her. She is a clone made from Yui Ikari's DNA, and when she dies saving Shinji from Armisael, a new Rei takes her place. In The End of Evangelion she turns away from Gendo and merges with Lilith.
Misato Katsuragi is NERV's Operations Director, a captain and later a major, who takes Shinji and Asuka into the apartment she shares with her penguin, Pen Pen. Her father died saving her at Second Impact. In The End of Evangelion she is shot while rescuing Shinji and sends him off with her cross pendant and a kiss.
Shinji Ikari is the Third Child, a 14-year-old whose distant father, Gendo, calls him to Tokyo-3 only to pilot Unit-01. Telling himself "I mustn't run away," he fights the Angels, runs away more than once and has to kill his friend Kaworu. In The End of Evangelion he finally rejects Instrumentality.
Lilith is the Second Angel, the white giant crucified in Terminal Dogma deep below NERV and the being all of humanity descends from; LCL is its blood. Kaji shows it to Misato as Adam, but Kaworu sees the truth. In The End of Evangelion, Rei merges with Lilith and the giant starts Third Impact.

Evangelion manga posters
Asuka, Rei and Shinji star in our Evangelion manga posters. Instant download, print at any size.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is set in 2015, 15 years after Second Impact killed half of humanity. In Tokyo-3, the special agency NERV fights giant beings called Angels with the Evangelions, giant humanoid weapons piloted by 14-year-olds. NERV's Commander, Gendo Ikari, calls his son Shinji Ikari to pilot Unit-01 beside Rei Ayanami in Unit-00, and Asuka Langley Soryu arrives with Unit-02 in Episode 8. Misato Katsuragi takes Shinji and Asuka into her home while Ritsuko Akagi leads Project E and the Magi. Kaworu Nagisa arrives near the end.
Evangelion Ages and Birthdays
Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Toji and Kensuke are 14, the age the Marduk Institute supposedly screens for when it picks Eva pilots, while Hikari is 13 and Kaworu, born on the day of Second Impact, is 15. Among the adults, Maya is 24, Misato 29, Kaji and Ritsuko 30, Gendo 48 and Fuyutsuki 59. Yui was 27 when Unit-01 absorbed her. In the Rebuild films, Asuka Shikinami Langley is 28 after the time skip but still looks 14, which the films call the Curse of Eva.
The Evangelions are giant humanoid weapons cloned from Adam, except Unit-01, which was cloned from Lilith. In the TV series the cores of Unit-01 and Unit-02 hold the souls of their pilots' mothers: Yui's soul inside Unit-01 drives its berserk rampages, and Unit-02 holds Asuka's mother, Kyoko. Rei's Unit-00 was the prototype, while the American-built Unit-03 and Unit-04 both end in disaster.
The Angels are mysterious giant beings that NERV fights one at a time. The TV series counts 18 of them. The first 17 run from Adam and Lilith to Tabris, who is Kaworu, while the 18th, the Lilin, is humanity itself. Their names come from angels of Judeo-Christian lore, while the Rebuild films number their Angels differently and leave them unnamed.
Led by Commander Gendo Ikari and his deputy, Kozo Fuyutsuki, NERV fights the Angels from its headquarters in the GeoFront beneath Tokyo-3. Officially it is a United Nations agency, but it is really overseen and funded by SEELE, the secret group led by Keel Lorenz that controls the UN. NERV grew out of Gehirn, where Naoko Akagi built the Magi. The names are German: Gehirn means brain, NERV nerve and SEELE soul. SEELE wants Human Instrumentality, while Gendo secretly plans his own version to see Yui again. In the Rebuild films, Misato and Ritsuko leave to found WILLE, which fights to destroy NERV.
Second Impact, Third Impact and the Human Instrumentality Project
Second Impact hit Antarctica on September 13, 2000, set off by the Katsuragi Expedition's contact experiment with Adam. It melted the ice caps, shifted the Earth's axis and killed half of humanity. The world was told a meteorite struck, but SEELE intended it all along. SEELE's next goal is a controlled Third Impact: the Human Instrumentality Project, which would merge every human soul into one being. The TV ending in Episodes 25 and 26 shows Instrumentality inside the characters' minds and ends with everyone congratulating Shinji. In The End of Evangelion it happens for real: people dissolve into LCL until Shinji rejects it, and only he and Asuka are seen on the shore of a sea of LCL.
Shinji, Asuka, Rei and Kaworu
Shinji's bonds with Asuka, Rei and Kaworu drive the story. Asuka kisses Shinji in Episode 15, and The End of Evangelion leaves the two of them alone on the beach. Rei, who is made from his mother's DNA, smiles for the first time when Shinji rescues her in Episode 6. Kaworu, who appears in only one episode, tells Shinji he likes him with the Japanese word suki, which can also mean love. In the last Rebuild film, Asuka tells Shinji she loved him, and the adult Shinji leaves the station with Mari.
Neon Genesis Evangelion vs Rebuild: Watch Order
The original story is the 26-episode TV series from 1995 to 1996 and The End of Evangelion, a 1997 film with an alternate ending that picks up after Episode 24. Death and Rebirth, also from 1997, is mostly a recap. Rebuild of Evangelion is a separate continuity of four films from 2007 to 2021 that starts as a retelling and then goes its own way, with Mari, Asuka Shikinami Langley, WILLE and a 14-year time skip. A common watch order is all 26 episodes, then The End of Evangelion, then the Rebuild films in release order.

Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old boy whose father, NERV Commander Gendo Ikari, calls him to Tokyo-3 to pilot Evangelion Unit-01 against the Angels. Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu and Misato Katsuragi are the other main characters.
What is Evangelion about?
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a 1995 anime series directed by Hideaki Anno. It follows Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old whose father calls him to Tokyo-3 to pilot Evangelion Unit-01, a giant humanoid weapon, against monsters called Angels, 15 years after Second Impact killed half of humanity. Behind the battles, SEELE and Shinji's father, NERV Commander Gendo Ikari, each pursue their own version of the Human Instrumentality Project.
How old are the Evangelion characters?
Shinji, Rei, Asuka and Toji are 14, while Kaworu, born on the day of Second Impact, is 15. Misato is 29, Ritsuko and Kaji are 30, Gendo is 48 and Fuyutsuki is 59. The story is set in 2015.
How old is Asuka?
Asuka Langley Soryu is 14 in her official profile, the same age as Shinji and Rei, with a birthday of December 4, 2001. In the Rebuild films, Asuka Shikinami Langley is 14 in the second film and 28 after the time skip, though she still looks 14.
Is Kaworu an Angel?
Yes. Kaworu Nagisa is Tabris, the Seventeenth Angel, who carries the soul of Adam. SEELE sends him to NERV as the Fifth Child in Episode 24, and when he reaches Terminal Dogma he asks Shinji to kill him.
How many Angels are there in Evangelion?
The TV series counts 18 Angels: Adam, Lilith, the 15 that NERV fights from Sachiel to Tabris (Kaworu) and the Lilin, which is humanity itself. The Rebuild films number their Angels differently and give them no names.
What is Third Impact in Evangelion?
Third Impact is the event SEELE plans in order to complete the Human Instrumentality Project and merge every human soul into one being. In The End of Evangelion, Rei merges with Lilith, people dissolve into LCL and Shinji finally rejects Instrumentality; only he and Asuka are seen on the shore afterward. In the Rebuild films, Kaji gave his life to stop a Third Impact.
What order should I watch Evangelion in?
Start with the 26 TV episodes, then watch The End of Evangelion, the 1997 film with an alternate ending that picks up after Episode 24. Death and Rebirth is mostly a recap of the series. The Rebuild films are a separate continuity: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.0+1.0, in that order.
Who does Shinji end up with?
The End of Evangelion leaves Shinji and Asuka as the only two people on the shore, while the last Rebuild film, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, ends with an adult Shinji leaving Ube-Shinkawa Station with Mari.
Who voices Shinji in English?
Spike Spencer voices Shinji in the original ADV dub and the Rebuild films, and Casey Mongillo voices him in the Netflix dub. In Japanese, Shinji is voiced by Megumi Ogata.
How can I vote for my favorite character?
