Frieren Characters

Frieren Main Characters

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End begins after the hero's journey is over. The elf mage Frieren helped Himmel, Heiter and Eisen defeat the Demon King, and fifty years later she watches Himmel die and realizes how little she knew him. Decades later she heads north to Aureole, the land where souls are said to rest, with two young companions. Fern is Heiter's adopted daughter and Frieren's apprentice, and Stark is Eisen's apprentice, a young warrior who is braver than he thinks. The priest Sein travels with them for a while.

How Old Is Frieren and How Long Do Elves Live?

Frieren is over 1,000 years old: the mage Flamme found her more than a thousand years ago, and elves live almost forever. That is why ten years with the Hero Party felt short to her, while Himmel and Heiter grew old and died. Elves also have little interest in love or children, so very few of them are left. Dwarves like Eisen live about 300 years and demons like Aura and Macht for centuries, while the humans around Frieren age fast: Fern turns 16 in Episode 3 and 18 in Episode 14.

Frieren and Himmel: Did Frieren Love Himmel?

Himmel met Frieren as a lost child when she showed him the way and cast a spell that filled a field with flowers, the first time he found magic beautiful. On their quest he knelt to slip a ring with a mirrored lotus onto her finger, a design that stands for eternal love, although Frieren says she did not know that then, and he let towns build statues of him so she would not be alone in the future. Frieren cried at his funeral because she never really got to know him, and she still keeps the ring. The story never says outright whether she loves him back; in a later manga arc, a demon's dream spell even traps the two of them in a vision of their wedding.

Fern and Stark

Fern and Stark bicker like siblings, yet they keep choosing gifts for each other. For Stark's 18th birthday Fern helps him pick a silver bracelet, and for hers he spends three hours finding a bracelet with a mirrored lotus, the same eternal love design as Frieren's ring, which Fern keeps wearing. In Season 2 Stark tells Fern she was as much his reason to join the journey as Frieren, and he calls a day out together their first date. The story has never said they are a couple, but they clearly grow closer.

The Hero Party

The Hero Party was Himmel the Hero, the priest Heiter, the dwarf warrior Eisen and the elf mage Frieren. The king sent them off with just ten copper coins, and over ten years they sealed Qual, drove off Aura and defeated the Demon King. Fifty years later Himmel dies of old age, Heiter dies more than 20 years after him and Eisen is retired, so Frieren travels on with a new party.

The First-Class Mage Exam

The First-Class Mage Exam, held every three years, this time in the northern city of Äußerst, decides who earns the highest rank of the Continental Magic Association. In the first stage, run by Genau, parties of three had to catch a Stille bird. In the second, run by Sense, they raced through a dungeon where the Spiegel copied every mage. In the third, Serie interviewed each candidate herself. Only six passed: Fern, Übel, Land, Wirbel, Denken and Methode. Frieren failed the interview, and Serie barred her from every Magic Association building for a thousand years.

Frieren Demons and the Seven Sages of Destruction

Demons in Frieren look human and speak, but they are monsters that use words only to deceive. They have no families, feel no guilt and judge one another by mana, which is why Frieren hides hers. Each one masters a single great spell. The strongest served the Demon King as the Seven Sages of Destruction under Schlacht the Omniscient, who could see a thousand years ahead. The Hero of the South killed Schlacht and three of the Sages, Himmel killed Böse the Immortal, Frieren made Aura behead herself and Denken kills Macht in the manga.

Zoltraak and Frieren's Magic

Zoltraak began as the demon Qual's killing magic, the first spell that pierced every defense of its time, and it once killed most of the mages in the region Qual attacked. In the 80 years Qual was sealed, humans studied it and built defenses, and it became the ordinary offensive magic every mage learns. Frieren kills Qual with his own spell, and Fern fires it in rapid barrages and hidden long-range shots. Frieren also collects odd folk spells, keeps opening treasure chests that turn out to be mimics and names Flamme's field of flowers as her favorite spell.

Frieren Voice Cast

How We Rank the Characters

Our popularity ranking combines two things: how often people search for each character and your votes. The ranking is updated every month, and the Fan Favorites list changes every day. The first-seen line on each card shows the episode where the character first appears, or the manga chapter for characters who are not in the anime yet.
