Also known as Seiya Kou
The playful lead singer of the idol trio Three Lights, a sore loser who loves American football and flirts with Usagi from their first meeting.
The most powerful of the Four Kings of Heaven, a white-haired, caped strategist who first appears comforting Zoisite and easily sees through others' intentions.
The anime follows Usagi Tsukino, a crybaby from Tokyo's Azabu-Juban district who learns from a talking cat that she can become Sailor Moon. Tuxedo Mask, a masked hero in a top hat, keeps coming to her aid, while Chibiusa, who later fights as Sailor Chibi Moon, tumbles from the sky in the second season. Usagi is the only character who appears in all 200 episodes.
The Inner Sailor Guardians
Usagi's first teammates are four schoolgirls with planetary powers. Sailor Mercury joins in episode 8, Sailor Mars in episode 10 and Sailor Jupiter in episode 25, while Sailor Venus, already known as the masked crime fighter Sailor V, is the last to arrive in episode 33. Although Jupiter lies beyond the asteroid belt, Sailor Jupiter counts as one of the Inner Sailor Guardians.
The Outer Sailor Guardians defend the solar system against enemies from beyond it and at first keep their distance from Usagi's team. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune arrive together in the third season, Sailor Pluto stands guard at the Space-Time Door and Sailor Saturn, the youngest of the four, completes the team.
The Sailor Starlights
In the final season, Sailor Stars, three Sailor Guardians from beyond the solar system come to Earth to find their lost princess and perform as the hit idol trio Three Lights. In the 1990s anime, Seiya, Taiki and Yaten Kou live as men but become women when they transform into Sailor Star Fighter, Sailor Star Maker and Sailor Star Healer. The same season brings Chibi Chibi, a mysterious little girl who turns up at Usagi's door. Sailor Cosmos belongs to the manga's version of this final arc and to the 2023 Cosmos movie, and she never appears in the 1990s anime.
Sailor Moon Cats: Luna, Artemis and Diana
The three cats of the series are Luna, Artemis and Diana. Luna is the black cat who mentors Sailor Moon, Artemis is the white cat who advises Sailor Venus and Diana is the small gray kitten at Sailor Chibi Moon's side. All three can talk and wear a golden crescent moon on their foreheads.
The Moon Kingdom
Long before the story begins, the Moon Kingdom flourished in peace during an era called the Silver Millennium. Queen Serenity ruled it with her daughter Princess Serenity, heir to the throne.
When the anime first aired in English in 1995, the dub gave most of the cast new names and called the team the Sailor Scouts. Usagi Tsukino became Serena and Makoto Kino became Lita, while Kunzite, the only general given a different mineral name, became Malachite. The Viz Media dub keeps the original Japanese names, which the table below pairs with the old dub names.
Every known birthday and zodiac sign, from January to December. Several signs match the Guardians' names: Sailor Moon is a Cancer, the sign ruled by the Moon, while Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus were born under Virgo, Aries and Libra, the signs ruled by their own planets.
How old each character is when they first appear in the story. Sailor Moon is 14 when she first transforms, the same age as Ami, Rei, Makoto and Minako, while Hotaru is 12 and Setsuna, at 19 to 20, is the oldest Sailor Guardian.
Each character's Japanese voice appears next to the English voice from the Viz Media dub, the first English version to include the final season, Sailor Stars. Sailor Moon is voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi in Japanese and Stephanie Sheh in English, while Keiko Han plays both Luna and Queen Beryl in the original.
Our popularity ranking, shaped in part by your votes, decides the order of the cards. Right now Sailor Moon is on top, ahead of Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Mars.
Do you share Rei's fiery spirit, Makoto's big heart or Michiru's calm? Our quiz matches your answers to one character from the series, from the Guardians to the cats and the villains.
Our popularity ranking combines two things: how often people search for each character and your votes. The ranking is updated every month, and the Fan Favorites list changes every day. Each card shows the character as the story first introduces them, so the facts never spoil what comes later.

Who are the Sailor Guardians?
Sailor Moon leads the team. The Inner Sailor Guardians are Sailor Mercury (Ami Mizuno), Sailor Mars (Rei Hino), Sailor Jupiter (Makoto Kino) and Sailor Venus (Minako Aino), while the Outer Sailor Guardians are Sailor Uranus (Haruka Tenoh), Sailor Neptune (Michiru Kaioh), Sailor Pluto (Setsuna Meioh) and Sailor Saturn (Hotaru Tomoe). Sailor Chibi Moon and the Sailor Starlights join them later.
Is it Sailor Scouts or Sailor Guardians?
Both names refer to the same team. The Japanese original calls them Sailor Senshi, which translates to Sailor Guardians or Sailor Soldiers. Sailor Scouts is the name the original English dub gave them in the 1990s.
What are the names of the cats in Sailor Moon?

What are the English dub names of the Sailor Moon characters?
In the original English dub, Usagi is Serena, Ami is Amy, Rei is Raye, Makoto is Lita, Minako is Mina, Mamoru is Darien and Chibiusa is Rini. Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna became Amara, Michelle and Trista. Viz Media's newer dub uses the Japanese names.
Who are the villains in Sailor Moon?
Each season has its own enemy: Queen Beryl's Dark Kingdom and its Four Kings of Heaven in the first season, the aliens Ail and An and then the Black Moon Clan in Sailor Moon R, the Death Busters in Sailor Moon S, Queen Nehelenia's Dead Moon Circus in Sailor Moon SuperS and Sailor Galaxia's Shadow Galactica in Sailor Stars.
Who voices Sailor Moon?
Kotono Mitsuishi voices Usagi in the original Japanese anime, while Stephanie Sheh plays her in the Viz Media English dub. In the earlier English dub, Tracey Moore, Terri Hawkes and Linda Ballantyne took on the role.
