Updated November 2026 · Fan Favorites change every dayEvery Guardian also has an everyday name, and the original English dub gave most of them new ones, so Usagi became Serena and Chibiusa became Rini. Hotaru kept her name, and the Starlights have no dub names because their season, Sailor Stars, was never part of that dub.

Phrases and attack names are written as they are first heard in the original Japanese anime, which already uses English words for most of them. In the 1990s English dub, Sailor Moon drops the "Make Up!" from her phrase and Mercury's Shabon Spray becomes Mercury Bubbles Blast.

As the team's leader, Sailor Moon holds stronger powers than any other Guardian, yet she would rather heal a monster back into the person it once was than destroy it. Her weapon changes with every season, from the tiara she throws like a glowing disc to the Moon Stick and the rods that follow it.
#2
Sailor Jupiter is the team's powerhouse, and when she calls Supreme Thunder, a lightning rod rises from her tiara to gather the storm before she hurls it at the enemy. Later her lightning takes the shape of a dragon and of the crackling disc of Sparkling Wide Pressure.
#3
Sailor Mars brings the fire to every battle, from the Fire Soul she shoots from her fingertips to Burning Mandala, a ring of flame that splits into eight blazing hoops. Her paper charms can pin a monster in place or drive an evil spirit out of a person, and she can sense danger as it approaches.
#4
The second Guardian Luna recruits, Sailor Mercury is the team's analyst: her visor and pocket computer scan each enemy for a weak point while her Shabon Spray hides her friends in a thick fog. Later she traps enemies in columns of water and ice with Shine Aqua Illusion.
#5
Sailor Saturn, the Guardian of Silence, completes the Outer Guardians and fights with a single weapon, the Silence Glaive. In Sailor Stars she uses it to raise the Silent Wall, a dome of energy that shields her friends from the season's strongest attacks.
#6
Sailor Chibi Moon fights with her Pink Moon Stick, though her Pink Sugar Heart Attack often takes more than one try before its little hearts hit home. In SuperS she rings the Crystal Carillon to call Pegasus, whose power Super Sailor Moon needs for her finishing attack.
#7
The first Outer Guardian to appear, back in Sailor Moon R, Sailor Pluto watches over the gateway through time and stops anyone who tries to pass without her leave. Her Dead Scream gathers a whirlwind into a ball of purple energy at the tip of her Garnet Rod.
#8
Sailor Venus is the last Inner Guardian to join the team, though as Sailor V she was fighting evil before any of them, and her Sailor V manga started the whole franchise. She strikes with Crescent Beam and a chain of glowing golden hearts that can bind a foe or pull a friend to safety.
#9
Sailor Neptune fights in step with her partner Sailor Uranus, and her Deep Submerge sends a sphere of blue energy shaped like the planet Neptune crashing into the enemy. Joined with World Shaking and Pluto's Dead Scream, it becomes an extremely powerful combined attack.
#10
Sailor Uranus leads the Outer Guardians with her partner Sailor Neptune at her side. Her World Shaking sends a ringed ball of energy racing through the ground like an earthquake before it rises to strike.
#11
Sailor Cosmos comes from the manga and the two-part film Sailor Moon Cosmos rather than the 1990s anime, and she is counted among the most powerful Sailor Guardians of all. She wields the Cosmos Crystal, can sense and use magic across vast distances and can raise a barrier that shields everyone near her.
#12
Known on Earth as Seiya Kou, Sailor Star Fighter leads the Sailor Starlights. Her Star Serious Laser gathers a ring of stars into a blast of light, though she holds back its full power so Eternal Sailor Moon can heal the people behind the monsters.
#13
Of the three Starlights, Star Healer is the first to sense when a Star Seed has been stolen, and as Yaten Kou she shares the stage with the other two in the Three Lights. Her Star Sensitive Inferno turns a star of light in her palm into a crackling burst of electricity.
#14
Sailor Star Maker fights beside Star Fighter and Star Healer as one of the three Sailor Starlights, while on Earth she performs as Taiki Kou. Her Star Gentle Uterus fires a volley of glowing orbs, later launched from the Sailor Star Yell she carries into battle.

The Sailor Scouts are the magical heroines at the heart of Sailor Moon, known in today's official English versions as the Sailor Guardians. Each one has an everyday identity and transforms with a magic item, such as a brooch or a pen, into a warrior in a sailor-suit uniform with powers tied to her planet or star. In the 1990s anime, Sailor Moon is their leader.
Usagi Tsukino is Sailor Moon, Ami Mizuno is Sailor Mercury, Rei Hino is Sailor Mars, Makoto Kino is Sailor Jupiter and Minako Aino is Sailor Venus. Chibiusa later becomes Sailor Chibi Moon, and the Outer Guardians are Haruka Tenoh (Uranus), Michiru Kaioh (Neptune), Setsuna Meioh (Pluto) and Hotaru Tomoe (Saturn). The original English dub renamed Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto and Minako as Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita and Mina.
There is none: all three names mean the same heroines. Sailor Senshi is the original Japanese term, meaning Sailor Soldiers. Sailor Scouts comes from the English dub that first aired in the 1990s, while Sailor Guardians is the official English name used today, including in Viz Media's English dub.
The Inner Guardians are Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus, who fight beside Sailor Moon from the first season. The Outer Guardians are Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn, who guard the solar system against threats from beyond it and in the anime usually act on their own.
Star Fighter, Star Maker and Star Healer are Sailor Guardians from a distant planet who reach Earth during Sailor Stars, the closing season of the 1990s anime, while looking for their lost princess. On Earth they pose as Seiya, Taiki and Yaten Kou of the idol band the Three Lights, and in the anime they are young men until they transform.
On the team it is Sailor Moon: the 1990s anime gives its leader stronger powers than any other character, and every season brings her a more powerful form. Among the rest, Sailor Saturn has the most destructive power, and in the manga Sailor Cosmos stands above them all. Cast your vote on this page to rank them yourself.
Their outfits are modeled on the sailor-style school uniforms worn by many Japanese students, with each Guardian's version accented in her own color. Creator Naoko Takeuchi credits the idea to her editor, Fumio Osano.
